Freetown, February 25, 2025 – Chief Minister Dr. David Moinina Sengeh has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening agricultural research and improving the conditions of service for researchers at the Sierra Leone Agricultural Research Institute (SLARI). In a high-level meeting at State House, the Chief Minister engaged with Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Dr. Henry Musa Kpaka, and SLARI’s Acting Director-General, Dr. Conteh, to discuss the implementation of the SLARI Act 2023 and the pressing concerns of research staff.

Speaking on behalf of SLARI employees, Dr. Conteh expressed gratitude to Dr. Sengeh for granting the audience and acknowledged the continued support of Dr. Kpaka and the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security in advancing agricultural research in Sierra Leone. He highlighted key issues affecting the institution, particularly the need for a structured career progression system that aligns with university standards in the country.

Dr. Kpaka emphasized the ministry’s unwavering support for SLARI, recognizing the critical role of research in ensuring food security and sustainable agricultural development. He assured the leadership of SLARI that the government remains committed to addressing their concerns and implementing policies that enhance research excellence and staff welfare.

Drawing inspiration from Dr. Sengeh’s own academic journey, including his groundbreaking Ph.D. research at MIT on prosthetic socket design, Dr. Conteh stressed the importance of policies that attract and retain top researchers in the agricultural sector. The discussions underscored the government’s vision for a robust research framework that drives innovation, enhances food security, and contributes to national development.
